I’m foremost an actor. I feel embarrassed being compared to the guys who really work at it. I fake it, I make believe I know all about it, which is what you’re supposed to do as an actor.

I ended up an actor, did my first professional union gig in 1974, and I’ve been doing it ever since.

The stage is where I feel most comfortable, and I miss it all the time.

There are actors who can pull of a writer’s lines; I am not competent enough to do that.

I succeeded on sort of chutzpah and charm. No technique at all, didn’t know what I was doing, but it worked and the character suited me.

I prefer theatre but TV keeps you well known.

The first thing I read was of my character on the phone talking to Sydney’s fiance. Though short, it was so beautifully written, and it made me laugh. I thought if I wanted to play a character, this would be it.

I think you have a pact with an audience in every picture, and I think the pact is to try and be truthful and to be real.

I had no idea of the character. But the moment I was dressed, the clothes and the make-up made me feel the person he was. I began to know him, and by the time I walked onto the stage he was fully born.

I never was disillusioned with acting because I love acting.
