The music industry is saying, This is the format, and if you’ll fit into this format, you can be on radio, and if radio will play you, MTV will expose you, and MTV will expose you, we’ll sell records.

And there’s a lot of that stuff with people bringing their kids, kids bringing their parents, people bringing their grandparents – I mean, it’s gotten to be really stretched out now. It was never my intention to say, this is the demographics of our audience.

But what you realise after you’ve been in the business for a while is that people develop opinions about you that don’t have anything to do with your music, they like or dislike you for a million reasons, they like or dislike you for your last record.

If one plays good music, people don’t listen and if one plays bad music people don’t talk.

A lot of the songs start with an image. I was sitting there playing the guitar and I pictured this old, dirty green car, with the window rolled down, in the hot, hot, hot Texas heat, and this beautiful woman I knew when I was a kid sitting behind the wheel, looking out at me.

I’m very pro presenting the best music I can to the widest audience possible.

The world would be a duller place without Moulin Rouge.

Performing live is the greatest high in the world. That’s why I do what I do.

Singing is an arduous business and it needs sacrifices.

I like to follow my favorite team and talk sports with my band or fans. You won’t believe how many musicians are sports fans. We have so much time on tour that we need these outlets for relaxation.
