My biggest challenge will be to play the totally submissive woman. It takes a toll on you when you play someone who’s far removed from your personality.

I take away something from every role. I’m still learning and that’s what life is about.

I never want to sort of put all the cards on the table all at once, because that’s somehow there’s always a journey to go on. There’s always something to be revealed, in my mind, about characters.

It’s nice to establish yourself as an actor first and a singer second. Proof is such a tremendous piece of work, and I’m incredibly lucky to be a part of it. I’m sure that the musicals will happen in the future, though.

But comedy I’d love to do as much as humanly possible.

But James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, they did such great work, especially in the last show.

Years and years ago, when everyone knew that Pierce was going to be doing the job, they started selecting new people. I had this bizarre thing when I hadn’t done many movies, and of going on for an interview.

I’ve played villains on stage – you know, the Iagos and so on – but I think of myself as a funny person. I mostly did comedies before I did TV work.

When you stand on the stage you must have a sense that you are addressing the whole world, and that what you say is so important the whole world must listen.

Definitely not a sitcom, that’s my first condition. No sitcoms.
