I look at my career and it’s still hard for me to believe the way things turned out and how things happened. I’ve been so blessed.

I was a dancer for many years. I was a premier dancer with ‘Porgy and Bess,’ the opera. And I taught dance some, in different places.

I was asked to act when I couldn’t act. I was asked to sing ‘Funny Face’ when I couldn’t sing, and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn’t dance – and do all kinds of things I wasn’t prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.

I missed the boat when I was doing Late Night.

There are a lot of unseen elements to having a successful singing career.

I haven’t earned much money through films.

I do respect them; I have great respect for women. In fact, one of the reasons ‘The Apprentice’ was such a successful show for so many years, the audience of women was fantastic.

By getting into distribution and production, I am actually widening my base.

While my mother wanted me to be a musician, I wanted to become an electronic engineer.

The success my children have had has helped me immensely. I’ve showed them a certain respect for this career.
