You’re just playing, playing, playing, and then an image or something will come into your mind, and basically you’re just narrating it with music, letting it move along.

It is normal for me to wake and find myself writing in the dark… or to be out of my tomb, caught in an unearthly world, alive with the images that haunt me.

For a long time now I have tried simply to write the best I can. Sometimes I have good luck and write better than I can.

The best job that was ever offered to me was to become a landlord in a brothel. In my opinion it’s the perfect milieu for an artist to work in.

And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.

The really great writers are people like Emily Bronte who sit in a room and write out of their limited experience and unlimited imagination.

I don’t like to write like God. It is only because you never do it, though, that the critics think you can’t do it.

Perhaps it is because cats do not live by human patterns, do not fit themselves into prescribed behavior, that they are so united to creative people.

So it’s not so much that I set out to do something different, it’s just that the songs themselves require their own individual voice and attention.

One must be an inventor to read well. There is then creative reading as well as creative writing.
